A Boy or a Girl?

About two weeks ago, I read a news about a Chinese grandma killed her granddaughter. As you already read my blog about the drop of the one-child policy rule in China, you probably know the reason why the grandma did that.

The newspaper simply summarized the process how she killed her granddaughter. She took the baby away while her daughter in law was taking a nap, went to a stairs interlayer, dropped the baby on the ground, step on the baby's head until she died, and then threw the baby in the garbage can. The grandma went back to her daughter in law's room at the hospital, acted like nothing happened, and without feeling guilty. Her daughter in law asked her about the baby, she said, I killed her. The newspaper didn't say anything about how the mother's feeling at that time, but it did mention that the family doesn't want to put the grandma in jail because they understand how much she wants a grandson.

After I read the news, I felt angry and depressed for how much the policy and tradition changed people. It makes people think that it’s ok to kill a baby for its gender, it's ok to kill daughters in law if they don't have a boy baby in her womb, it's ok to treat granddaughters different than grandsons for them being female, and it's ok to pamper grandsons or sons because they are males that they have the ability to carry on the family line. Why should gender be the line to evaluate a human being's value?  Why should the gender's difference be the motive of crime?

If China wants to stand firm in its position in the world, the first thing the government should do it’s to change peoples' minds. As many of you can see, Chinese do many strange things than you guys. Maybe I should say not only Chinese but many people think that Chinese are rude and stiff. I agree with that too. Yes, China is developing very fast from every way but the people in China aren't improving their morality as fast as its country which makes people from other countries think Chinese are not educated enough.

In my personal perspective, China focuses too much on its value but forgets a country is constituted by its people. People in China don't get good welfare like the Americans when they need help from the government deeply. Their children need to be educated, need to be fed, need to have clothes to wear, and even need places to stay. I rather our government uses the money for those in some struggles instead of using the money for some technology uses that we already have.

Talk about tradition, from Mao's generation, good means everyone is good not any single one. I admit that it’s impossible to be fair for everyone but at least make the balance seems like on the same level. No matter how the government changes the policy, the tragedies will happen. To be most likely prevent from those, change peoples' minds first, then there will be no needs to change the policy.
