The Drop of One-Child Policy

Based on the Chinese History book, the purpose of making the one-child policy was to limit the population growth, and I had no doubt to it after I read the article. It mentions that America government should take part of the guilt because they put pressure on China. However, I don’t think the American government should take any responsibility for that because China was a weak, newborn country after the world war and its civil war. If China was a strong, wealthy nation like what it was in Tang Dynasty, no one can threaten it by only looking at the expanding population.

As a Chinese who has been surrounding by that policy since born, I cannot deny the policy did cause many tragedies.

I hate to admit that boys are more valuable than girls in our culture, and this pedantic thought causes a huge growth of abortion and death of pregnant women. Many Chinese women consider proud as, to have a boy baby, because boys mean a lot to some traditional Chinese families, and a boy baby can also raise the mother's position at home. It is lucky for a woman to have a boy in her first pregnancy, but fortune does not patronage everyone. Some women try hard to have boys but they can’t, so they have to kill every female fetus in their wombs, and the consequence of that makes them can’t even have babies. The missing generations of girls got killed by their moms and the ridiculous tradition. Or, maybe that's one of the consequence for being a weak nation, which needs two or more generations lives to pay for.

Although many women kill their babies, the great of a mother's love cannot be erased. I saw a news about a woman die for refusing to abortion. Her mother in law forced her to have a boy and made her aborted many times. In fact, she loved to have a girl, but her mother in law didn't care about her opinion, she kicked her stomach hard which caused the abortion and her death. Her mother in law said, " You are a useless woman for not being able to have any boys. Why are you making all of us so shameful?", while she was kicking her stomach. Where did the morality go? Where did the humanity go?  How can you value a woman by only if she can have a boy or not? Why should a woman be a production machine of boys for the so-called tradition or sense of pride? Does the one-child policy mean, if you are only going to have one child, you better have a boy? I don’t think the policy did something wrong but it should be the Chinese Communist Party's fault for not spreading a good concept.

Unfortunately, I am not a boy, but fortunately, my parents didn't kill me. However, my dad still wants a boy. I don’t blame him, my grandma shows more attention on my uncle because he has a son, but my dad has me. I blamed myself when I saw his sense of loss because of me being a girl, and wish I could be a boy if that's one way to make him happy.

Many people complain about the drop of the policy is too late. Why? First, it's too late for those people who are my parent's age to have a second child, even they have good economic conditions. Second, it's too much pressure for those younger people who just started, because it’s already too hard for them to feed themselves or even pay for their rents.

China is a developing commendable country, even though many people think Chinese are uneducated, or China is an inept country, I'm still proud of I am Chinese. To put in the other hand, the one-child policy is one of the progress for China to become a strong nation, failures are made before succeeding arrives.
